Dorchester Carers Nook
At Dorchester Carers Nook, we’re here for those who care.
This new space, created with carers, for carers, offers a warm welcome, practical support, and a chance to connect with others who understand the challenges and rewards of caring. Whether you're looking for advice, a listening ear, or simply a break and a cuppa, we’re here to help you feel less alone. With trusted partners and trained staff on hand, you can access local services, enjoy meaningful connections, and even arrange safe activities for your loved one—giving you time to recharge.
Who's behind the project?
The service is a joint effort from:
- Mid Dorset Primary Care Network (PCN)
- Age UK
- Dorset Council
- Dorchester Day Centre
- Carers Support Dorset
Together, we have developed a safe, welcoming space where carers can unwind, connect, and access the help they need.
What does the drop in offer?
The Dorchester Carers Nook takes place on the second wednesday of every month and each month has a specific focus, the sessions include:
- Carer Café – Meet other carers, share experiences, and build supportive connections.
- Activities for the Cared-For Person – Supervised, engaging sessions to give carers a little breathing room- this requires booking ahead of time.
- Info & Advice Stalls – Access to health services, local charities, and community organisations.
- On-Hand Support – From PCN teams, Social Prescribers, and Long-Term Condition Coordinators.
It’s designed to be a one-stop space for care, connection, and community — for both carers and the people they support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an invitation to book an activity session?
How do I book a session?
What happens after I have booked the session?
The Dorchester Day Centre will contact you to complete the relevant consent form and conduct a telephone review of your cared-for person's needs. This helps ensure we can provide appropriate support on the day of the session.
Does my cared for need to meet a set criteria?
While the Dorchester Day Centre is fully equipped to support a wide range of needs and disabilities, the final decision on accepting a booking lies with the Day Centre. This will be discussed with you during the telephone assessment.
What if the needs of my cared for exceed the criteria for the session but I would like to attend the information hub and support group?
In this case, the Day Centre may refer you to the Dorset Council Carers Team, who can support you in exploring alternative care or respite options. This can help remove any barriers to you accessing the Carers' Nook Information Hub and Support Group.
Do I need to be in attendance throughout the session?
Yes. This service has been designed to benefit you as a carer by providing access to support, information, and peer connection through various health, social care, and community services. If you need to leave the session at any point, this must be discussed and agreed with the Day Centre at the time of booking.
Is there any transport available?
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide transport to these sessions.
Is there a waiting list if the session is fully booked?
