Op COURAGE

Op COURAGE is the NHS Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service. No matter your rank, length of service, or reason for leaving, Op COURAGE offers specialist support tailored to your needs.

How to access

If you’re a veteran or serving member of the Armed Forces and meet the criteria, you can refer yourself directly by:

  • Calling 0300 034 9986 (Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm)

  • Emailing mevs.mhm@nhs.net

  • Or asking your GP or health professional to refer you

Where

Initial support is offered over the phone or online, with face-to-face services available if needed.

Op COURAGE

The Veterans Hub

The Veterans Hub offers a safe, welcoming space for veterans and their families to come together, connect, and socialise in a non-clinical setting. It’s a place for peer-to-peer support, shared experiences, and easy access to a range of services tailored to the Armed Forces community.

The Veterans Hub

Blind Veterans UK

They provide rehabilitation, training, practical advice, and emotional support to veterans, regardless of how or when they lost their sight. They're here to help blind veterans regain their independence and live the life they choose.

How to access

You can apply online, download application forms from the website, or call the support team on 0800 389 7979 for assistance.

Where

Initial support is available online or over the phone, but you may be referred for face-to-face services if needed.

Combat Stress

Combat Stress provide expert treatment and support for veterans from all services and conflicts, with a focus on those facing complex mental health challenges linked to their military experiences.

How to access

Help is available 24/7 through the Combat Stress Helpline:

Serving personnel and their families can also call 0800 323 4444 for support.

Dorset SSAFA

SSAFA provides vital support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, with a focus on direct assistance for those facing physical or emotional challenges.

Issues like addiction, relationship breakdown, debt, homelessness, PTSD, and depression often emerge during the transition to civilian life. SSAFA is committed to helping individuals overcome these challenges and rebuild their lives with dignity.

How to access

If you need urgent help, you can contact Forcesline on 0800 260 6780 or talk to Forcesline advisors online with their new live chat service. They are open 09:00 - 17:00, Monday to Thursday, and 09:00 - 16:00 on Friday.

Dorset SSAFA

Defence Medical Welfare Service

DMWS is an independent charity providing vital medical welfare support to those who have served or continue to serve on the frontline. They address non-clinical issues—such as housing crises, PTSD, or social challenges—that may impact recovery and wellbeing. Whether it’s a life-threatening injury, a veteran facing housing difficulties, or a frontline worker returning after trauma, DMWS helps navigate the healthcare pathway to unlock the right support and improve recovery.

How to access

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes is dedicated to helping veterans, their families, serving personnel, reservists, and those who served under UK command transition confidently into civilian life. Whether or not they've seen conflict, support is always available—and it’s never too late to ask for help.

How to access

Call 0300 303 9888 or submit and enquiry form to get started. It’s free, confidential, and open to anyone in the Armed Forces community.

Help for Heroes

Royal British Legion - Dorset

The Area Welfare Team is part of the Legion’s Poppy Support services, here to help anyone who is serving, has served, or is a dependent or carer of someone who has served in the UK Armed Forces.

Support includes crisis grants, help with homelessness, compensation advice, careers guidance, and home or hospital visits—and much more.

How to access

Free telephone helpline is open to everyone, 8am - 8pm, 7 days a week. Call 0808 802 8080.

Royal British Legion

Blesma

Blesma is committed to helping serving and former members of the Armed Forces who have lost limbs, the use of a limb, an eye, or their sight as a result of their service. Their support is lifelong, practical, and built on a deep understanding of military life.

Blesma

Swift - Always a Rifleman

The Always a Rifleman Programme delivers rapid, face-to-face support in the critical early hours of a crisis. Through coaching, mentoring, and mental health support, it helps individuals navigate real-life challenges and begin the journey toward recovery and long-term wellbeing. AARP is there to ensure no one faces difficult times alone.

How to access

The service is available 24/7 for veterans and their dependants of The Rifles and its antecedent regiments. Call 0800 470 0941
